Notice: Shut down of the multimedia messaging service (MMS) on 27 September 2022.

An Post Mobile, in line with many other mobile operators, is shutting down the multimedia messaging service, known as MMS. The service will end on the 27th September 2022. Normal standard Text Service (SMS) will remain active as the Standard Text Service operates independently of the MMS service.

Background

MMS is primarily used to send multimedia messages (images, short videos, and documents) and was popular on early multimedia phones. Customers who use the MMS service pay €0.30c per MMS. However, today most customers use services like WhatsApp, TikTok, Facebook messenger and iMessage to send and receive multimedia messages due to the higher quality of these messages when compared to MMS. As a result, today MMS hardly plays a role in any network.

The good news is that the normal standard Text Service (SMS) will remain active as the Text service operates independently of the MMS service.

How will this affect me?

As very few MMS messages are now sent, the shutdown of MMS services will not affect the vast majority of An Post Mobile customers.

For some customers who are using older phones that do not have WhatsApp, TikTok, Facebook messenger or iMessage, but still want to be able to send/receive multimedia messages, an upgrade to a smart phone (or compatible feature phone) will be required.

An Post Mobile carries a range of affordable Smart Phone suitable for all ages. For those who prefer a Feature Phone, the stylish and easy to use Doro 7030 gives you access to WhatsApp and Facebook.
