Online Shopping Changes from 1st July

29 June 2021

From July 1st, VAT and customs charges will apply when you shop online on websites based outside of the EU. We’re here to help you understand the changes and continue to invest in technology to make online shopping easy.

From July 1st 2021, Irish Revenue will apply VAT and customs charges* to items shipped into Ireland from non-EU countries regardless of the item value.

Most of these charges are applied in customers' shopping baskets at checkout so no further action is required by customers before delivery. If VAT and customs charges were not applied at the point of online checkout, Irish Revenue may apply a charge when the goods enter Ireland. An Post will inform customers and collect the charges before delivery is made.

*Exempt items - There are a number of items exempt from VAT (0%) and will not be subject to charges when they are shipped. Information on VAT rates are available on the Irish Revenue website. For more information on international sending, please click here.
