17 September 2019

  • First new generation post office opens
  • Major new facility for Thurles
  • Significant investment in new location

Thurles 16/09/2019 - The first in a new generation of flagship post offices was unveiled in Thurles on Monday as An Post opened its new offices in the town’s busy shopping centre.
Thurles staff members Aoife Phelan, Rose Leahy, Carmel Ryan and Ciara Grace all set to open the towns new post office. On Monday morning, Andrew Cummins, the Branch Manager of the new Thurles facility, flicked the switch to begin trading at the new hi-tech office. Mr. Cummins and his staff have overseen the move from the former post office just a short distance away at Liberty Square in the town.
The Liberty Square building, which closed its door for the last time on Saturday, will now be placed on the market by An Post.
Debbie Byrne, Managing Director of An Post Retail says An Post is delighted to unveil this first new generation offering to the people of Thurles. ‘This office gives us the opportunity to provide the people of Thurles with the services and the products they need, but in a facility that suits the demands of a modern retail business. This a great day for An Post and we look forward to welcoming all our customers, long standing and new, to our new base.’
Andrew Cummins, the man at the helm in Thurles, said ‘Thurles can be really proud of this post office it is going to be a great addition to the town and we look forward to welcoming them here. This is not just a new post office it’s a whole new way of doing with our customers’.
The move marks a major investment by An Post and a step change in the provision of financial services and ecommerce services to the people of Thurles. The new modern office is open-plan with a variety of customer services areas including a self-service kiosk and information points. A key feature is the array of post office counters which feature automated teller units and which are designed for ease of use by all customers. The store mirrors An Post’s combination of tried and trusted post office service with a new modern and heavily digital future.
An Post announced some months ago that it intended closing the Liberty Square premises that had been the company’s base for many years. The move was prompted by its plans to upgrade the local facility but was hampered by the condition of the three-storey listed building.
The resulting bonus for Thurles customers is the country’s first flagship post office developed as part of An Post drive to transform the national post office network. On offer in Thurles, along with all long established services, are a range of financial products including the An Post Money Current Account, Credit Card and loans from An Post Money with the market leading rate of 8.4%.
The new location offers key retail space in the busy Thurles Shopping centre, a multi storey car park and a shared campus with leading retailers including Dunnes Stores. The office will open each day from 9am until 5.30pm and Saturday from 9 to 1pm.
A major feature of the façade of the new post office is a large bank of parcel lockers which enable many customers to have their parcel or package diverted for pick up outside of regular Post Office opening times – in the evenings or at weekends.
