Book Selling Ireland

Introduction

Bookselling Ireland is run by a committee of booksellers, chaired by Aoife Roantree of Dubray who we recently interviewed, and backed by the BA. The Booksellers Association exists to support, advise and work with its members to create excellent products and services for booksellers. They monitor all the structures that underpin the modern-day book trade and life as a bookseller, as well as keeping a close eye on developments in technology and government legislation, offering wide-ranging advice and information for members. Book Selling Ireland is the force behind Irish Book Week, which launched in 2018, the Irish Book Trade Conference, as well as World Book Day and Independent Bookshop Week in Ireland.

The Cultural & Literary Heritage of Ireland

Bookshops play an important role in the cultural and literary heritage of Ireland – a state founded by what is often termed the ‘Poet’s Revolution’. In this country, the standing of literature has always been prominent in the national psyche. Irish bookshops offer a cultural showpiece for the native Irish, the diaspora and other visitors to the island; they also have e-commerce websites selling many Irish books abroad. Irish bookshops promote Irish publishing and together represent the new Ireland of the 21st century. It’s crucial that bookshops are seen as a resource to develop and support cultural tourism.

A Library in Every School

Book Selling Ireland encourages the provision of school libraries. The benefits of every school enjoying a well-maintained, curated library service would ensure that every child in Ireland, regardless of their background, has access to a full range of reading materials, in both digital and physical forms at their school. Booksellers provide books, e-books and other digital resources to school libraries, ensuring that there are plentiful reading materials for children of all ages to enjoy in the classroom, in the library and at home.

Public Libraries for All

The Irish public library service is a source of national and historic pride. Book Selling Ireland strongly supports the provision of libraries around the country. The Library Supply Sector in Ireland contributes in no small way to the selection of best book stock, efficient delivery of special titles and the promotion of Irish publishing for the public libraries.
