Current Account FAQs

You can open a current account called Money Mate for your child if they are aged 7–15. It comes with a debit card, and your child can manage account via our money app. Parents can manage allowances, spending limits and view transactions. Parents do not have to have an An Post Money Current Account to open a Money Mate account.
From age 16, your child can open their own current account.

You can open a joint account by visiting any An Post branch in Ireland. To open a joint account with one other person, both account holders must visit a post office together.
Key things to note before application:

1. Both people need to bring:

• Proof of identity (such as a passport or driving licence)
• Proof of address dated within the last six months (such as a utility bill or bank statement)

2. You'll share the same IBAN/account, but each person gets:

• Their own debit card
• Their own online banking login
• Their own PIN and card number
• Each account holder must have their own email address
• You can have the same home address or different addresses

You cannot apply for a joint account in the app, but you can fill out the application form before your visit or pick up the form when you are in the post office.

You can open a current account with An Post Money in two easy ways:

1. In the An Post Money app: Download the An Post Money app from the App Store or Google Play and follow the on-screen steps.
2. In a post office: Visit any post office nationwide and apply in person.

You’ll need:

1. One valid photo ID (passport or driving licence)
2. One proof of address dated within the last six months (for example, a utility bill, bank statement or Revenue letter)

You can open an An Post Money Current Account if you’re aged 16 or over and live in the Republic of Ireland. You don’t need to have any other An Post products to apply.

To open an An Post Money Current Account, you must be:

• Aged 16 or over
• Resident of the Republic of Ireland

To apply, you will need to have

• Provide valid photo ID (passport or driving licence)
• Provide proof of address dated within the last 6 months (for example, a utility bill, bank statement, or Revenue letter)

You don’t need to have any other An Post products to apply. 

Applying for a current account with An Post Money just takes a few minutes, whether you apply in the app or in a post office.
After you submit your application, we will review and approve the account. Once approved, your account details and debit card are sent by post. They usually arrive within 7 working days.

To switch your existing bank account to An Post Money, you first need to open your current account with us.
 A typical switching process looks like this:

• Credit transfers: Enables customers to send money electronically from their An Post Money current account to another bank account.

A monthly €6 maintenance fee will be charged for current accounts, if you’re aged 23 or over. If you’re aged 16–22, the monthly maintenance fee is €2.

This monthly maintenance fee includes:

• Online purchases
• Annual statements
• One free cash withdrawal per week at a post office

Yes. Open Banking lets you securely share your account information or make payments through trusted third‑party providers, with your permission.

• Credit transfers: Enables customers to send money electronically from their An Post Money current account to another bank account.
• Standing orders: Allows customers to schedule fixed, recurring payments from their account on agreed dates.
• Direct debits: Allows approved organisations to collect agreed payments automatically from the customer’s account.
• Digital wallets: Lets customers add their card to Apple Pay, Google Pay or Fitbit Pay for convenient contactless payments.
• QuickLodge: Lets customers add money to their current account in app.

You can see your balance in the An Post Money app dashboard, through online banking or at certain ATMs.

Your available balance is the amount you can spend from your main account.
Your overall balance includes your main account plus any Jars.

We send you an annual statement by post. An Post Money customers can also view and download statements in the An Post Money app.

You can also:

• Get a mini statement (last six transactions) in any post office

• Receive quarterly paper statements if you’ve opted in

Additional statements are subject to a fee, and you must have enough money in your account to cover the charge.

Anyone in the SEPA zone can pay money into your account using your IBAN. The SEPA zone covers 41 European countries, including all EU countries, countries which are not part of the euro area or the EU, and several territories with historical ties to those countries.

Use the salary notification form to share your An Post Money account details with your employer so your salary is paid directly into your account.

To transfer money between your personal account and your joint account, you first need to add the other account as a recipient in the app.

After that, here are the steps you can follow: 

• Go to Pay & Transfer 
• Select Manage recipients 
• Tab Add a new recipient
• Enter the IBAN and account name of your other account (your joint account or personal account). 
• Once the recipient is set up, you can make transfers between the two accounts through Pay & Transfer. 

A couple of things to note:

• If you've just added a new recipient, An Post Money may apply a 48-hour waiting period before you can send money to that new payee. 
• You and the joint account holder share the same joint account IBAN, but each person has their own login and debit card credentials. 

If you opened your current account using the An Post Money app, you’re already registered for online banking - there’s nothing more you need to do.

If you’re an existing customer and would like to set up online banking, you can register in one of two ways:

1. Register on our website: Your An Post Money Current Account welcome letter includes your 10 digit User ID. Visit the registration page and create a 5 digit PIN, which you’ll use to log in to online banking.
2. Register using the app: Download or update to the latest version of the An Post Money app from the App Store or Google Play Store. You’ll be asked to create a 5 digit app PIN and a password. Once that’s done, you’ll be automatically registered for online banking.

To cancel a direct debit, contact the service provider and ask them to stop taking payments from your account.

You can set up as many direct debits as you need. They can be paid from your main account or from a Jar.
You can:

• Set up a direct debit using a mandate from the service provider
• Change the account a direct debit is paid from by filling out this form or sharing your IBAN
• Cancel a direct debit by contacting the service provider

Download the app from the App Store (iOS) or Google Play Store (Android)

Verify Me is linked to the mobile number registered to your account. If you have changed your mobile number, you’ll need to update it before you can use Verify Me.
You can update your mobile number:

• In the An Post Money app, if you opened your current account through the app.
• Call us on 01 705 8000 or email Customerservices@anpostmoney.com if you opened your current account in the post office.

No. Verify Me can only be used by the account holder. Never let anyone else access your app or use your security details.
 

You can install the app on multiple devices. Push notifications are sent only to the most recently installed device.
 

No. Verify Me is an optional way to confirm your identity and save time when you call customer support. If you choose not to use it, you can continue with the usual security checks.

You will need to be using the An Post Money app and call us from the registered mobile number on your account.

2. When prompted, open the An Post Money App
3. Approve Verify Me
4. Wait to be directed to an agent

Yes, Verify Me is only accessed from within a secure logged-in session on your Mobile App. It is designed to confirm your identity before you reach a customer support agent. Never share your app login details or a One-Time- Passcode (OTP) with anyone.

If Verify Me does not work, stay on the call and follow the instructions provided. You can still confirm your identity using the usual security checks.
 

Open the An Post Money app and select Money Manager from the menu.

Verify Me uses information from your secure An Post Money app to confirm your identity. Customer support receives the verification result only and does not receive your app login details or security credentials. 

Verify Me is a new way to confirm your identity in the An Post Money app when you call Customer Support. When verification succeeds, the agent can see you have been verified, so you can spend less time answering security questions.

You activate Dynamic CVV in the An Post Money app under Manage Card. Once turned on, you can view your CVV in the app when making online payments. Just tap “Show CVV” on either the Home screen or Manage Card section, and you can copy the code from there.

You must call customer support from the mobile number registered to your account and use a supported version of the An Post Money app. 
From 30 October 2026, you will need the following operating system versions to access An Post Money app:

• iPhone: iOS 17 or later
• Android: Android 10 or later

There are 2 possible reasons:

1. Notifications are turned off in your phone settings
Check that notifications are enabled for the An Post Money app:

iPhone

• Settings → Notifications → An Post Money 

• Turn on Allow Notifications 

Android

• Settings → Apps → An Post Money → Notifications 

• Ensure notifications are enabled 

2. Notifications are disabled in the app
Some alerts can be managed within the app itself:

• Open the An Post Money app 

• Go to My Settings > Notification preferences 

• Check that push notifications are enabled

You can set up notifications such as:

• Account alerts: Sends notifications about important activity or updates relating to the customer’s current account.
• Account credits: Notifies the customer when money is paid into their current account.
• Account debits: Notifies the customer when money is taken out of their current account. 
• Card transactions: Sends notifications when the customer’s card is used for purchases or other card activity.

You manage notifications in the app under My Settings > Notification Preferences.

Round Up is a feature in the An Post Money app that helps you save automatically as you spend. It sweeps the spare change from your debit card payments into a Jar.
For example:

• You do a €1.90 purchase
• The transaction is rounded up to €2.00
• €0.10 is automatically moved into your chosen Jar

Over time, these small amounts can add up without you having to think about saving. You can also turn on a Round Up multiplier to save more.

Jars are like mini saving spaces (or sub accounts) within your current account that help you organise your money by letting you set it aside for different purposes. Each Jar has its own balance, so you might use one for bills and another to save for something special. You’re in full control of how you use your Jars, and you can name them to suit your needs.

For example, you could create Jars called:

• Holiday Fund 

• Rent & Bills 

• Emergency Savings 

• Christmas Shopping

You can create and manage up to 10 Jars in the An Post Money app.
Money kept in a Jar is protected - it won’t be withdrawn or spent unless you move it yourself, and it can’t be used for card purchases or cash withdrawals.

Log in to the An Post Money app, open your current account and select Manage Jars.
You can:

• Set savings goals
• Make one off or regular transfers
• Move money back to your main account

If you enter your password incorrectly three times, your account is locked to protect your security. Use the Forgot password option to regain access.

Contact Customer Services immediately on 01 705 8000 so we can investigate and advise you.

We use one time passcodes to protect your account and approve certain actions, in line with EU Regulations on Strong Customer Authentication (SCA).

We send your one time passcode by text message to your registered mobile number.

Check that notifications are enabled on your device and in the An Post Money app, then request the code again. If the issue continues, contact Customer Services on 01 705 8000.

Your funds are managed by An Post. Since we are not a Credit Institution, your funds are not covered by the Deposit Guarantee Scheme in Ireland. However, we place customers’ funds in segregated accounts (known as ‘safeguarding’ or ‘client funds’ accounts) with Financial Institutions that are approved by the Board of An Post to accept An Post deposits and that are authorised to operate in Ireland as a Credit Institution, in line with EU regulations and supervised by the Central Bank of Ireland.
 
This means that your funds are separated from our other assets and can be used to repay you and other customers in the unlikely event of our insolvency.

How do I change the name or address on my account?
Complete the change of name or address form and submit it to us.

How do I close my account or inform you about a change in circumstances?
Use the relevant form to notify us, including for account closure or notification of death.

Tap the (i) information icon on your current account card in the An Post Money app dashboard. Your IBAN and BIC are displayed there.

If your PIN doesn’t work, you can unlock it at an ATM:

• Go to the nearest ATM and insert your card
• Enter your PIN
• Select Other Services
• Choose PIN unlock

Once you complete this step, your PIN will work again for ATM and card transactions.

You need to have push notifications enabled to log into the An Post Money app.
To fix this, go to your device settings and turn on notifications for the An Post Money app.
                    

If you forget your debit card PIN, call Customer Services on +353 1 705 8000. We’ll send your PIN by text message to your registered mobile number.

 
 

If you need another way to pay, you can use Apple Pay, Google Pay or Fitbit Pay. Once your card is set up, you can pay securely without your physical card.
You can find setup instructions in the Digital Wallets section of these FAQs.
If your PIN isn’t working, you can still make contactless payments with your debit card:

• Maximum €50 per transaction
• Up to 5 transactions per day
• Daily limit of €150

These limits do not apply to Apple Pay, Google Pay or Fitbit Pay, although merchants may apply their own limits.

The An Post Money app is only available in the Republic of Ireland. Some devices have their Google Play Store location set to a different country.

To change your Play Store location:

• Open the Google Play Store app
• Select your Profile icon (top right)
• Choose Settings
• Select General
• Select Account and device preferences
• Under Country and profiles, select Ireland

Note: This change can take up to 48 hours to take effect.
If you still can’t see the app, try clearing your Google Play Store data:

• Go to your phone Settings
• Select Apps
• Choose Google Play Store
• Select Storage
• Tap Clear data

When you reopen the Google Play Store, the An Post Money app should appear.

We follow a clear and transparent complaints process:

1. Acknowledgement within 5 working days: We confirm receipt of your complaint by letter or email and outline the next steps and timelines.
2. Full investigation: We review the details of your complaint, gather any relevant information and investigate the issue thoroughly.
3. Final response within 15 working days: We aim to provide a final response within 15 working days. If we need more time, we explain why and let you know when to expect an update.
4. Further updates if needed: If the investigation takes more than 35 working days, we provide progress updates at least every 14 working days until it is resolved.
5. Your right to escalate: If you’re not satisfied with our final response, you can contact the Financial Services and Pensions Ombudsman (FSPO):

If your card is lost, stolen or damaged, you can withdraw up to €200 per day in emergency cash at any post office during opening hours, as long as you have enough money in your account. You can access emergency cash in the An Post Money app by:

• Opening your current account
• Selecting Manage Card
• Choosing Emergency Withdrawal and following the on screen steps

Once you have your Emergency Cash Code, simply bring it to any post office to receive your cash.

If you’ve forgotten your password, you can reset it quickly in the app

1. Open the app and tap Forgotten password on the login screen.
2. Enter the email address you used to register for the app.
3. Tick the box to confirm you’re not a robot.
4. We’ll send a verification code to your mobile phone.
5. Enter the code on screen and tap Continue.
6. When asked, enter your mother’s maiden name.
7. We’ll email you instructions and a secure link to reset your password.
8. Check your inbox and follow the link in the email (If you don’t see it, check your junk or spam folder)
9. Create your new password.
10. Return to the app and tap Return to login.
11. Enter your app PIN, then log in using your email address and new password.

If you’re still having trouble, please contact our support team on +353 1 705 8000

If your card is lost or stolen, call us immediately on freephone 1800 267 678. We’ll cancel your card straight away and issue a replacement, which arrives within seven working days.

When your replacement card arrives:

• Sign the signature strip on the back of the card
• Call +353 1 705 8000 to activate the card and retrieve your PIN

It’s important to report a lost or stolen card as soon as possible. If you don’t, you could lose some or all of the money on your account, just as if you lost cash. If your card is damaged, call our Customer Service team on +353 1 705 8000 and we’ll arrange a replacement for you.

The An Post Money app is developed and tested to meet WCAG Accessibility Levels A and AA on the latest versions of Android and iOS.

However, some older devices or operating system versions may have limitations.

Known accessibility issues

• Google reCAPTCHA audio activation may not work correctly on iPhone XS and iPhone 11
• Google reCAPTCHA image pop ups may not work fully with screen readers
• Text resizing is not supported within the app, but device zoom features can be used
• Some third party features, such as adding money by debit card, may have accessibility limitations outside our direct control on both iOS and Android

SEPA (Single Euro Payments Area) is an initiative to make it easier to send and receive euro payments across EU countries and several other participating countries.
 

SEPA payment limits let you set your own daily and per transaction limits for outgoing payments, giving you more control over how much you can send.

No. Setting a SEPA payment limit is optional.

SEPA Instant Payments (also known as SEPA Instant Credit Transfers) are euro payments that transfer money within 10 seconds, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including weekends and holidays.

A SEPA Standard Payment usually takes 1–2 business days to reach the recipient.
A SEPA Instant Payment is processed within 10 seconds, at any time of day or night.

To make a transfer:

• Log into the An Post Money app
• Open your current account
• Select Pay and Transfer
• Follow the on screen steps

If you have an An Post Money Current Account, transfers to Money Mate accounts remain instant. If you pay in from another bank, check with that bank for details on SEPA Instant Payments.

No, there are no additional fees for sending SEPA Instant Payments. 

Yes. You can send SEPA Instant Payments at any time, including weekends and SEPA bank holidays.
Occasional system maintenance may apply.
 

To update a payee name:

• Delete the existing payee via Pay & Transfer > Manage recipients > All recipients
• Add the payee again using the correct name and the same IBAN

For security, you’ll be asked to take a selfie to confirm it’s you.

Verification of Payee is an extra check designed to help keep your money safe. Before you send a SEPA payment, we check that the name you’ve entered matches the person or business you’re paying. If there’s a difference, we’ll let you know and ask whether you’d like to continue. 
 

VOP will be available by 9 October 2025. 

No, VOP will apply to both SEPA Payments and SEPA Instant Payments. 

VOP applies when you:

• Make a SEPA payment
• Add or amend a payee
• Set up a standing order

Before a payment is sent or a payee is saved, we check the recipient's name with their bank.
You’ll see one of four results:

• Match
• Close match
• Mismatch
• Couldn’t verify

Review the result carefully before deciding whether to continue.
For incoming payments, we may share your account name with the payer’s bank to help them verify your details.

The name you entered fully matches the name held by the recipient’s bank for that IBAN.

• The name doesn’t fully match (for example, “Joe Bloggs” and “J. Bloggs”)
• We show you the name confirmed by the recipient’s bank
• Check the details before continuing
   

• We can’t confirm the recipient’s name
• The account may be closed, not a payment account, or temporarily unavailable

Check the details with the payee before continuing. Sending money without verification increases the risk of error or fraud, and we may not be able to recover the funds.

• The name you entered does not match the name held by the recipient’s bank

We strongly recommend checking the details with the payee before proceeding, as payments sent with incorrect details may not be recoverable.

No. Verification of Payee does not affect how quickly your payment is sent once you approve it. 

1. Open the Google Pay app and select the account you want to use.
2. Tap Payment, then Add and choose Credit or debit card.
3. Scan your card or enter the details manually.
4. Verify your card if prompted.

1. Sign in to Payment methods.
2. Select Add payment method, then Add credit or debit card.
3. Enter your card details and verify if required.

A small temporary charge may appear on your account to check your card details. This will be removed shortly.

1. Open the Wallet app.
2. Tap the + icon in the top right corner.
3. Scan your An Post Money debit card or enter the details manually.
4. Follow the on screen steps to finish setting up.

1. Open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone.
2. Tap Wallet & Apple Pay, then Add Credit or Debit Card.
3. Scan your An Post Money debit card or enter the details manually.
4. Follow the on screen instructions.

1. From the transactions overview, tap Manage cards.
2. Under your debit card, tap Add to Apple Wallet.

You can now pay with Apple Pay using your iPhone or Apple Watch wherever you see the contactless or Apple Pay symbol.

1. Open the Fitbit app and tap the Today tab.
2. Tap your profile picture, select your device, then tap Wallet.
3. Follow the on screen steps to add your card. You may be asked to verify your card and set a 4 digit watch PIN.

1. Open Fitbit Pay on your watch: 

• Ionic and Versa: Hold the button for two seconds, or swipe down twice and tap the Fitbit Pay icon.
• Other devices: Press and hold the left button for two seconds, then swipe to Payments if needed.

       2.Enter your watch PIN if prompted.
       3. Hold your wrist near the payment terminal.
       4.Your watch will vibrate and show a confirmation when payment is successful.

1. Tap the Google Pay button at checkout.
2. Choose your payment method and enter your shipping details if asked.
3. Confirm your order.

1. Wake and unlock your phone. You don’t need to open the Google Pay app.
2. Hold the back of your phone near the payment reader for a few seconds. A blue tick will appear when the payment is complete.
3. If prompted, follow the instructions on screen. Some terminals may ask for a PIN or signature. 

• Debit cards: Enter your card PIN (this is different from your phone unlock code).
• Credit cards: You may be asked to sign for higher value payments.

If the payment doesn’t work, try holding your phone closer, adjusting its position, or holding it in place for a few more seconds. Make sure the store accepts mobile payments.

1. Tap the Apple Pay button at checkout.
2. Check your billing, shipping and contact details. To use a different card, tap the card icon.
3. Confirm the payment: 

• iPhone with Face ID: Double click the side button, then use Face ID or your passcode.
• iPhone with Touch ID: Use Touch ID or your passcode.
• Apple Watch: Double click the side button.

      4. When the payment is successful, you’ll see Done and a tick on screen.

1. Double click the side button to use your default card.
2. Hold your Apple Watch display near the contactless reader.
3. You’ll feel a gentle tap when the payment is complete.

1. Rest your finger on Touch ID to use your default card.
2. Hold the top of your iPhone near the contactless reader until you see Done and a tick.

1. Double click the side button to use your default card.
2. Authenticate with Face ID or enter your passcode.
3. Hold the top of your iPhone near the contactless reader until you see Done and a tick.

We’re updating our minimum iOS requirements to make sure the An Post Money app continues to deliver a secure and reliable experience.

This change helps ensure:

• Enhanced security - Your data is protected with the latest security updates
• Improved performance - A faster, more stable app experience
• Access to new features - New functionality that requires up to date software

These changes affect customers using iOS devices that don’t meet the new minimum software requirement.
If your iPhone is running a version of iOS older than iOS 17, you’ll need to update your device to continue using the app.

To continue using the An Post Money app on an iPhone, your device needs to meet the minimum iOS software requirement.
Here’s what to do:

1. Check your iOS version: Go to Settings > General > About to see which version of iOS your device is running.
2. Update your device if needed: If your iOS version is below the required minimum, go to Settings > General > Software Update and install the latest available version.
3. Contact us if you need help: If your device doesn’t support the required iOS version, contact our Customer Support team to discuss alternative ways we can assist you.

If your device isn’t compatible with the required iOS version, you may no longer be able to access the An Post Money app.
If this happens, please contact our Customer Support team. We’ll help you understand your options and how best to manage your account.
