Managing Money and Expenses During the School Year

23 September 2024

With kids back at school, many parents are breathing a sigh of relief! However, with the new school year comes a whole new set of costs. From uniforms to extracurricular activities and transport costs, it’s easy for the expenses to start piling up. Here’s our guide to managing your finances effectively during the school year! Get Ahead with Back to School Budgeting The first step in managing school expenses is creating a budget. Start by listing all costs, such as uniforms, school supplies, and any technology needed for learning. Once you have the basics covered, account for weekly costs and see if there’s anywhere spend can be reduced. Lunches: Buying ingredients in bulk or meal prepping can help reduce spend on lunches. Extracurricular Activities Extracurricular activities can be great for a child’s development, but they also come with costs. It’s important to evaluate these activities and decide which ones fit within your budget. Buy second-hand: If your child is into a sport or an activity that requires equipment or gear, check out second hand shops or online marketplaces. You can often find gear in great condition at a fraction of the price. Transport Costs Transport can be a huge expense during the school year, especially if the school is far away or if they take part in activities that require some travel. Carpooling: Organise a carpool system with other parents in your area to help save on petrol and diesel costs. Walking or cycling: If your child’s school is close enough, encourage walking or cycling to school. Not only does this save money, but they also get some exercise in along the way! Start Teaching Your Kids the Value of Money Back to school is a great opportunity to teach your child about money and how to manage money responsibly. Teach them about earning money: Consider giving your children a small amount of weekly pocket money in return for completing chores around the house. This teaches them the connection between work and earning money. Set savings goals: If your child wants something special, help them set up a savings plan. Teaching them to save for something overtime and see their savings build up encourages financial responsibility. Back-to-school season can be an expensive time of year so planning and smart budgeting can help ease some of the financial pressure. It’s also a good opportunity to teach children some valuable money lessons, helping them develop money skills that will last a lifetime!

Rental Scams

26 August 2024

As we near the start of the college year, and with summer holiday season still upon us, it is important to remain alert to the potential threat of rental scams. A rental scam tries to con you out of your money by pretending to offer you a room to rent. Often the person advertising the property doesn’t have the right to rent it out, or it may not even exist. Don’t be tricked into paying a deposit or any sum of money for a property that does not exist or has been offered to multiple people at once.

Holiday Scams

07 July 2024

Dreaming about exploring parts of Ireland you have never seen before, or lying on a beach on your annual summer holiday? Sadly, fraudsters take advantage of people searching for a cheap holiday or last minute getaway and use this to target people with everything from fake package holidays to accommodation that doesn’t exist. They will often create fake ads and offer to sell airline tickets at a discounted price or charge a small fee for a name change, but once the money has been sent they will disappear. To help you avoid becoming a victim this summer, here are some top tips to stay safe from holiday scams: • Always purchase tickets and hotel stays from trusted retailers or directly from the airline or hotel. You should always check for valid reviews on websites such as TripAdvisor. • When booking stays through websites such as Booking.com, only pay through their systems. You should never transfer money directly to an individual. Once your booking has been confirmed, if you receive what appears to be a message from the hotel asking you to pay more money, do not pay this without contacting Booking.com or the hotel directly using the contact details on their website. • Always be cautious of booking a holiday through social media, ensuring you carry out your own checks to validate that what they are selling is genuine. • Always take your time and do not succumb to pressure by the seller. • Always check the ITAA (Irish Travel Agents Association) or Fáilte Ireland to if see if they are licensed or registered. • Always use official websites to obtain a visa if required. Remember, the 1st one to appear on the search engine may not always be the official one. • Always use the official website or App to check in or confirm your details, never use a link in an email. • Always use your Debit or Credit Card, as this helps to protect your money should something go wrong. If you are asked to pay in cash, via a bank transfer or international payment, this is usually a tell-tale sign that the deal isn’t genuine. These type of payments can be difficult to trace and isn’t refundable. Remember, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Global Money Week - Saving vs Spending

22 March 2024

Saving and spending money are two fundamental aspects of personal finance that play a significant role in shaping individuals' financial confidence . Both require careful consideration and balance to achieve financial goals and maintain a healthy financial lifestyle. Saving money means putting some of your income aside for later or unexpected situations. It's a smart way to manage your money, giving you a safety net and helping you reach your future financial goals . Saving money can take various forms, including building an emergency fund or setting aside funds for specific goals like buying a home, starting a business, or funding education. Saving money gives you peace of mind and helps you feel financially secure. It means you can handle unexpected costs like medical bills or car repairs without having to borrow money . It's like having a safety net for tough times. Saving money helps individuals achieve their financial goals and aspirations. Whether that is a dream holiday, buying a home, buying a care, saving can turn dreams in realities. By sticking to your budget and consistently allocating funds to your savings goals, you can make steady progress towards a life you desire! Here are some saving tips to help you reach those goals: Set Clear Goals: Determine what you're saving for, whether it's an emergency fund, a vacation, or a down payment on a house. Having specific goals helps you stay motivated and focused on saving.. Automate Your Savings : Set up automatic transfers from your current account to your savings each payday. This way, you're less tempted to spend the money, and your savings grow without much effort.. Start Small: If saving seems daunting, start with small, manageable amounts. Even saving a small amount a week can add up over time and help you develop a saving habit.. Stay Motivated: Celebrate your saving milestones and reward yourself for reaching your goals. Having something to look forward to can help you stay motivated and committed to saving.. Stay Consistent: Saving money is a marathon, not a sprint. Stay consistent with your saving habits, even when faced with challenges or setbacks. Remember that every little bit counts towards your financial future.. Spending money means using your money to buy things you need or want. While it's important for daily life and enjoyment, it's crucial to be careful and smart about it. Spending too much or buying things on impulse can lead to debt and make it harder to reach your financial goals. Here are some tips when it comes to spending: Shop Smart: Take advantage of sales and discounts when making purchases. Comparison shop for big-ticket items and consider buying gently used items instead of new ones to save money.. Avoid Impulse Buys: Before making a purchase, especially a significant one, give yourself time to consider whether it's a want or a need. Avoid impulse buys by waiting 24 hours before making non-essential purchases.. In conclusion, saving and spending money are essential parts of managing your finances. Saving money helps you stay secure and reach long-term goals, while spending money lets you enjoy life and cover daily needs. By being careful with spending and saving regularly, you can find stability, build financial confidence, and create a better financial future.
