Best Home Improvement Grants in Ireland

Home energy upgrades not only make your home more comfortable, they can also make it more energy efficient, in turn reducing your energy costs and carbon emissions. In order to make retrofitting a possibility for many homeowners, the SEAI (Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland) offers a variety of home improvement grants which contribute to retrofitting costs, depending on the type of upgrade process you decide upon.

What types of home upgrade grants are available to me?
There are a number of ways to plan and manage your home energy upgrade and grant applications.
  • Individual Energy Upgrade Grants are the solution for homeowners who want to manage the upgrade process themselves. This option offers a selection of individual grants for home energy upgrades which are part funded with SEAI grants, up to 80% of the cost of the upgrade for a typical family home. Individual Energy Upgrade Grants are suitable for homeowners who want:
    • to manage their own project
    • to apply for the grant themselves
    • to pay for full cost of works and claim grants afterwards

There are six grant options available to homeowners who wish to manage upgrades themselves – Attic Insulation, Wall Insulation, Heating Controls, Heat Pump, Solar Thermal and Solar PV. Despite being more in charge of this grant, you still need to wait for the approval of the grant before starting the project.

  • One Stop Shop Grants are the solution for homeowners who want to carry out more than one retrofitting solution at a time and who wish to have the entire upgrade process managed for them, by professionals, from start to finish. One Stop Shop Grants provide up to 50% off the total cost.
  • Free Energy Upgrades formerly known as the Better Energy Warmer Homes Scheme, provides free energy-efficient home upgrades for homeowners that receive certain welfare payments.

Who is eligible for a home improvement grant?
  • All homeowners, including landlords, whose homes were built and occupied before 2011 can apply. This ‘built and occupied before’ date is defined as the date your electricity meter was installed.
  • Grants will only be issued once per property for each of the specific types of work implemented. Essentially, this means that any property which previously availed of wall insulation via the Better Energy Homes scheme, or any other government scheme, cannot receive additional support for further wall insulation works.
  • Your home should not have previously received any home improvement grants for the same improvement.
