Ireland is well-known for its long history of literature. The literary arts are still a cornerstone of Ireland’s contribution to the world and of our collective identity as a people.

Our striking collection of stamps, honouring four great Irish novels of the twenty-first century, was created by award-winning book-jacket illustrator, Jack Smyth.

These contemporary works, all published within the past 25 years, resonate with Irish and international readers alike. Demonstrating the power and charisma of these stories, each has garnered literary nominations and awards, has been successfully adapted for the screen, and viewed in cinematic form by audiences around the world. While each book is utterly unique, all hold themes of yearning and of striving for freedom and autonomy.

With varied fonts, arresting colours and simple, striking imagery, each stamp embodies the essential qualities of one of the four iconic novels featured, and also shown on the First Day Cover envelope: That They May Face The Rising Sun by John McGahern; Small Things Like These by Claire Keegan; Brooklyn by Colm Tóibín and Room by Emma Donoghue.

Together, they capture the inspirational qualities of literature and the power of creativity.
