Lámh Sign System - National Stamp

Humans are a social species, born with the basic need to
communicate. It’s just part of who we are. But children and
adults with cognitive challenges can find it very difficult to get
their message across. It can be greatly frustrating living in a
world in which you want to communicate but can’t.

The Lámh manual signing system – ‘lámh’ being the Irish word
for ‘hand’ – was developed in Ireland. It helps many children,
and a growing number of adults, to connect. People can use their
hands to communicate words, in tandem with verbal speech. In
the process, they are enabled to have richer, more fulfilling lives.

Lámh, which is continuously being developed, currently has 588
signs, each of which helps people with intellectual challenges to
break their silence.

Our designers created a playful design: a stamp cut into the
shape of hand, displaying the universal sign of greeting: a hand
waving a friendly ‘hello’. It captures the very essence of the
Lámh signing system; that everybody has the right to
communicate their needs and wants to others.

The inclusive, creative, and practical qualities of the Lámh signing
system embody the very best of communities around Ireland, 
embracing Lámh and creating spaces which help everyone to
feel nurtured, cared for and heard.
