Irish Traveller History and Culture
This unique stamp issue of two strikingly graphic stamps recognises and honours the rich culture, heritage, and identity of the Traveller community in Ireland.
This is the first time that Traveller History and Culture have featured on Irish stamps since being formally recognised by the Irish state as a distinct ethnic group in 2017. On that occasion, then-Taoiseach Enda Kenny said: ‘It is a historic day for our Travellers and a proud day for Ireland.’
Our stamps reference key aspects of Traveller history and culture, including their heritage of nomadism, their long tradition of engaging in craftwork and other economic activities, and their distinct use of language. They also reference the many people who have engaged in activism to promote equal rights for Travellers and to improve their wellbeing and status in Ireland, while working within Traveller communities.
In their own language – known as ‘Cant’ or ‘Gammon’ – Travellers call themselves ‘Mincéir’ or ‘Pavee.’ These words, take pride of place on these important stamps, alongside the image of a cup or ‘ponger’ made using Travellers’ traditional tin smithing skills, and a bright-painted covered wagon, summoning the Traveller relationship to both nomadism and home.
National Stamps with 'N' denomination cover postage for letters and postcards to destinations in Zone 1 (Ireland and Northern Ireland).
