Irish Cities: Coats of Arms - Cork
The very idea of coats of arms was born from a pan-European history of heraldry. Initially displaying a knight’s identity and loyalties, their use spread across the continent. Cities all over Europe have coats of arms; formalised works of art that are not just visually attractive but that say something important about the history and identity of the place.
Featuring the coats of arms of six Irish cities – Cork, Dublin, Galway, Kilkenny, Limerick and Waterford – our stamps evoke the rich, unique history of each, and enable us to explore sometimes contested aspects of Irish heritage, including the Norman invasion, the later British conquests, and Ireland’s ultimate journey towards self-determination. They also reflect the material and commercial aspects of cities’ histories – for example, a port city’s historical relationship with the sea, and the many journeys that have begun and ended there.
These Irish cities’ coats of arms, with distinctive heraldic symbols and stories that embody their history, allows us to feel connected to generations past, and experience pride and hope for the future of our cities and their people.
