Europa: National Archaeological Discoveries
Every year since the early 1960s, Post Offices all over Europe select
a common theme for an annual stamp issue. In 2025, the theme is
National Archaeological Discoveries.
Ireland has a rich archaeological record dating to the Mesolithic
Age, giving us many options to choose from! This evocative set
of stamps, launching on 8 May, features two remarkable artefacts.
One includes the detail of an 8th-century bronze ladle adorned
with a human head, discovered in Ballynapark, Co. Wicklow.
The second depicts a Viking oval brooch of cast copper alloy with
gilt, silver, and glass, probably from the 9th century. This brooch
is one of a pair found in the grave of a woman believed to have
been among the earliest Viking settlers in what is now Finglas
Village, Dublin.
Our First DayCover features a 6th century disc discovered in
Rathclittagh, Co Westmeath, decorated in the characteristic
nature-inspired La Tène style that was common throughout much
of Iron Age Europe. Likely to have been originally decorated with
red enamel, it may once have been part of a ritual object, such
as a shrine.
These and countless other archaeological discoveries provide
us with insights and links to the past that remind us not just of
our rich prehistory but also of the essential humanity and
creativity of those who preceded us.
