On September 5th, 1926, a fire in Dromcollogher, Co. Limerick tragically claimed the lives of forty-eight members of the small community. Almost ten percent of the local population died at a film-screening when highly flammable nitrate film caught fire.
Almost every family in Dromcollogher was affected, some losing several members and generations. In response to the approaching centenary of these dreadful events, a group came together in modern Dromcollogher. Its members formed a Centenary Commemoration Group which, in September 2026, is taking part in a programme of national remembrance to mark the centenary of this heart-breaking disaster in a meaningful, respectful manner.
Our stamp, honouring both the dead and those who have united to commemorate their lives, features a contemporary photograph of the aftermath of the disaster. It shows Church Street in Dromcollogher, thronged with a sombre crowd, paying their final respects.
