Druid Thratre Company 50th Anniversary
Ireland is well-known for its tradition of
theatre and spoken word. In 2025, the Druid
Theatre Company, one of Ireland’s most
important theatre companies, celebrates its
50th anniversary, a remarkable achievement.
The Druid Theatre Company was founded in
1975 “to be a touring theatre without peer,
anchored in the West of Ireland and looking
to the world, producing and presenting the
best work, both new and old, with boldness,
agility, passion and flair.”
Druid has more than fulfilled this ambitious
mission. It has created a rich legacy of
hundreds of diverse productions of
consistently high artistic standards. It has
boldly reimagined classics, and premiered
daring, innovative and challenging new work
every year.
Druid has kept alive the words of renowned
playwrights and, through its New Writing
Programme, supported playwrights at the
start of their careers. Thus, it cherishes our
shared legacy of theatre, while also creating
a legacy for the future.
Druid has done all this while also bringing
theatre to the people. It has toured
communities all over the island of Ireland and
internationally, with audiences in the UK, the
USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan
and Hong Kong.
Since March 2020 Druid has also reached
audiences in 130 countries with their ticketed
and free-to-view Druid at Home productions.
