Inspired by the old Irish air, The Dawning of the Day, poet Patrick Kavanagh composed his melancholic poem of unrequited love, On Raglan Road, for Hilda Moriarty.
He later gifted the song to the legendary ballad singer Luke Kelly, whose image features with lyrics from the song on one of four special edition stamps issued as part of the Great Irish Songs series.
