You can use the An Post Money Currency Card at millions of shops, restaurants and ATMs worldwide. Safer than cash and cheaper than a credit card, it gives you peace of mind as you know you won't face the headache of hefty charges when you get home. The 10 currencies available on the card are:

How to apply for and top up your An Post Money Currency Card

You can apply for the contactless prepaid MasterCard®, or top up your An Post Money Currency Card, at over 900 post offices nationwide.  You can also register to top up, swap and manage currencies online as you enjoy commission-free foreign exchange. If you have a single currency card, you can continue to top it up and use it until it expires or, if you prefer, you can swap it for a new, multi-currency card at the post office.

The An Post Money Currency Card is:


The card allows you to:

  • Withdraw local currency worldwide at ATMs displaying the MasterCard acceptance mark

  • Pay for goods and services at over 30 million shops, restaurants and other outlets around the world

  • Make contactless payments, pay online or over the phone

  • Go online to manage your account where you can top up, check your balance, swap currencies and view your transaction history


You can top up your currency card online in four easy steps:

  • Enter the 16-digit number on the front of your card
  • Enter your details
  • Choose the currencies you wish to purchase
  • Pay using your debit card

Once payment is successful you will be issued with a receipt for your top up.

You can also top up in your nearest participating post office. The account holder is the only person who can lodge funds and must present valid photo ID such as a passport or EU driving licence to comply with anti-money laundering requirements.

More secure than cash, the card is chip and PIN protected and is not linked to your bank account or personalised.

How it works

Getting a card is easy, provided you are at least 18 years of age and resident in the Republic of Ireland. Just download an application form (link to Currency Card application form), or pick one up at your local participating post office, and follow these steps:

  1. Fill out the form and take it to your nearest participating post office (PDF, 433KB)
  2. Bring valid photo identification such as a passport or EU driving licence
  3. Bring proof of address like a recent bank statement or utility bill issued in the last six months
  4. Load your card with the desired amount and pay with euro cash or a debit card
  5. Your card will be issued to you instantly

When you purchase any of the 10 currencies, the funds are loaded into the relevant currency wallet. Exchange rates are locked in on the date of purchase, top up or when you move money between currencies. Cards are only available in sole names.

What it costs

We do not charge a card fee but the Irish government charges annual stamp duty on prepaid card accounts at a rate of €0.12 for any ATM transaction in the Republic of Ireland, up to a total of €5.00.

The card is commission free for foreign-currency transactions. Point-of-sale and online transactions are also free when you have funds available in the currency in which they are made. Fixed fees are applied to ATM withdrawals.

There is a charge of 1.25% on euro currency purchases, top-ups and withdrawals at post offices, subject to a cap of €8.00 on withdrawals. Find out about other charges (PDF, 185KB) that might apply to your card.

What additional charges may apply to my card?

You will be charged a flat-rate ATM withdrawal fee. Some operators may also charge an additional fee. Depending on which currency you withdraw, the charges are as follows:

  • EU€2.00

  • US$2.50

  • GB£1.50

  • AU$3.50

  • CA$3.25

  • ZAR20.00

  • TRY5.50

  • NZ$3.50

  • AED8.00

  • CHF3.00

If a point-of-sale transaction or an ATM withdrawal is made in a currency on the card that does not have sufficient funds, the funds will be transferred from other wallets on the card in the following order of priority: EUR, GBP, USD, CAD, AUD, NZD, AED, ZAR, CHF. A foreign exchange rate determined by Mastercard will apply plus a foreign exchange fee of 5.75%.
 Where the card is used in a country that operates in a currency other than that on the card or you don’t have enough balance on the card in the transaction currency and the balance is taken from another currency wallet, the transaction amount will be converted into the next available currency in the usual wallet order. The foreign exchange rate is the rate determined by Mastercard, plus a foreign exchange fee of 5.75%.

Is my card subject to any limits?

The minimum purchase or top up is €50.00. Your card is subject to a number of other limits including:




Maximum amount you can withdraw from ATMs in 24 hours

€750 or currency equivalent

Maximum amount that you can spend at merchants in 24 hours

€2,000 or currency equivalent

Maximum load and balance allowed on your card at any one time

€5,000 or currency equivalent

Maximum load over 12 months

€30,000 or currency equivalent

Multiple currencies can be purchased at the same time. Cash back is not available on your card.
